Feb 11:00-12:00	Structural Studies of Enzymes with Multiple Substrates and/or Mechanisms -Xanthine Oxi-doreductase, Orotidine Decarboxylase, and Fluoroacetate Dehalogenase as Examples (abstract) Enzymes regularly impress with their high selectivity for specific substrates and their highly efficient catalytic mechanisms. There are, however, protein catalysts that either by Nature's design or by relatively small human interventions can be made to accept different substrates or even to apply quite different chemical mech-anisms. Mainly based on crystallographic experiments, the seminar will present the structural and functional aspects of three of these multi-purpose catalysts: xan-thine oxidoreductase, orotidine decarboxylase, and fluoroacetate dehalogenase. Mar 14:00-15:30	Noncovalent water-based assemblies: robustness, adaptivity, and function (abstract) Supramolecular nanoscale systems, whose structure and function can be reversibly controlled, are of primary importance for creating multifunctional adaptive nanomaterials. We will present our work on photofunctional 1D, 2D, and 3D nanoarrays assembled from well-defined molecular units in aqueous media. These systems are very robust, yet adaptive, showing multi-ple stimuli-responsiveness. Approaches to rational design of such systems will be discussed. We will also present our work on water-based recyclable noncovalent membranes that can be used for size-selective separations of nanoparticles and biomolecules.
