The Hilvert group is developing general strategies for creating protein molecules with tailored catalytic activities and specificities.  The approach taken is multidisciplinary, drawing on chemical synthesis, enzymology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and microbial genetics. 
Current topics of research include:
•    Design and chemical synthesis of artificial proteins
•    Enzyme mechanism
•    Catalytic antibodies
•    Laboratory evolution of enzymes
The overarching goal of this work is to understand, at the molecular level, the origins of the enormous rates and selectivities that enzymes achieve.  It may also yield practical catalysts for a wide range of applications in chemistry and biology.
